February Updates

E-mail blackandpinkchicago@gmail.com for more details about any of the following and to get connected. We’re welcoming new outside penpals!

January was an important month for Black and Pink Chicago, and we’re looking forward to February!

1. We officially signed on in support of the Reparations Ordinance for Chicago Police Torture Survivors. If passed, this would pay reparations and provide support and assistance to the 110 survivors of torture done by or as instructed by former police commander Jon Burge.  This violence was specifically enacted on black men and women, and although nothing can erase the trauma they endured, we hope that passing this ordinance will help with the healing and fight anti-blackness. To get involved, or to find out more about upcoming events, including a rally on 2/14, email  justicememorials@gmail.com .

2. Some of our outside members have been having discussions about how we center our work, and how to be more inclusive in the language we use when talking about activism and privilege.

3.  Our community dinner will be on Sunday, February 15th at Civic Lab, from 5-8 pm. Message us on facebook to find out more!

4. There are 2 events that we are supporting on 2/7.

  1. Dance for Dionte
  • 9 PM. Remember, come dance the night away at a party fundraiser to support Dionte! Dionte is a queer person of color targeted by Chicago police – and parade-goers – at Pride. He is now saddled with hundreds of dollars of fines related to the incident, and he is working hard to pay them off while also struggling to work, study and pay for school.
  • Email LT for address/directions and check out the Facebook event for more details.
  • If you can’t make it to the party but still would like to support, please donate to the online fundraiser! And share with your friends.

2.  Trans Dance Extravaganza: A Fundraiser for Self-Defense Classes for Trans Womyn

  • 8 pm at Consensus, 4929 S Campbell. The Midwest Aikido Center has agreed to do private Aikido classes for Trans womyn here in Chicago. This fundraiser will be raising money for those classes. The goal is to have 20 trans womyn kicking butt. For more details, check out the Facebook event.

We hope to see you at one of these wonderful events.  Or, if you can’t make it out to these, you can always drop by mail processing at 2nd Unitarian Church (656 West Barry Avenue) on Monday nights, 6-9 pm.
