Prison Rape is Funny to SNL and Betty White
It is really hard to be this full of rage! I just finished watching the video clip, “Scared Straight” sketch from SNL. The entire sketch is devoted to punchlines around sexual violence in prison. Why did they decide it was okay to make these jokes? They are also incredibly racist and play on prison stereotypes without any recognition that sexual violence inside is a HUGE problem!!!!!!! In women’s prisons the (reported) stats are 1 in 4 individuals experience sexual assault while in men’s prisons the (reported) stats are around 1 in 5. As a survivor of sexual violence in prison myself I find this skit really harmful. As someone who advocates for other survivors I know that jokes like this hurt them as well. We will not be invisible and we will not be at the butt of jokes! Express your anger and organize to end the violence of the prison industrial complex
Jeezus, that wasn’t in any way construable as clever or amusing. That was just ugly.
