1. Write to a queer prisoner or two. You can find a list of queer prisoners on this site here. There are more than 2.3 million peole in prison across the United States. Because of systemic oppression queer and trans people have a greater likelyhood of being incarcerated than hetero folks. The prison industrial complex functions as a system of destruction. It destroys the individual, communities (specifically communities of color and low-income communities), and our culture. The cycle of fear and violence perpetuated by the prison industrial complex tears at the fabric of our society. While few people actually benefit from the corrupt system, we are all bombarded with messages about the "safety" and "protection" we are being provided. Take the time to get to know someone on the inside. Or if you are yourself a survivor of the prison system, do not forget your friends and family behind bars. It is our responsibility to tear down this system, but beginning with building relationships through the walls is essential.
2. In Massachusetts the Statewide Harm Reduction Coalition is working intently on pushing forward the prison moratorium bill. You can read the moratorium bill HB1723 here and download a petition for you and all your friends to sign here. Stopping the Department of Correction from getting any more funds to run their draconian prisons must be a top priority! This is an opportunity for the steps towards the abolition of prison to really begin. We must step outside of the criminal injustice system as a place to solve issues of violence, drug additction, and other community concerns. True accountability and survivor based restorative justice are principles we must uphold if we are going to create any sort of lasting anti-oppressive community.
