1. Write to a queer prisoner or two. You can find a list of queer prisoners on this site here. There are more than 2.3 million peole in prison across the United States. Because of systemic oppression queer and trans people have a greater likelyhood of being incarcerated than hetero folks. The prison industrial complex functions as a system of destruction. It destroys the individual, communities (specifically communities of color and low-income communities), and our culture. The cycle of fear and violence perpetuated by the prison industrial complex tears at the fabric of our society. While few people actually benefit from the corrupt system, we are all bombarded with messages about the "safety" and "protection" we are being provided. Take the time to get to know someone on the inside. Or if you are yourself a survivor of the prison system, do not forget your friends and family behind bars. It is our responsibility to tear down this system, but beginning with building relationships through the walls is essential.
