1. Introduction to the Prison Industrial Complex:
Goals of Workshop –
a. Understand the underlying framework of the prison industrial complex
b. Develop a historical analysis of the modern penal system
c. Recognize the role systems of oppression, specifically racism, heterosexism, patriarchy, and classism play in the penal system
d. Introduce the concepts of penal reform and abolition
e. Cultivate a basic understanding of the cradle to prison pipe line and the role schools play
f. See the global manifestation of the prison industrial complex as interconnected

2. Introduction to Abolition:
Goals of Workshop –
a. Understand the underlying concepts of penal/prison reform and abolition
b. Develop a historical analysis of the abolition movement
c. Recognize the role resistance movements led by communities of color, queer/trans people, women, poor people, im/migrants have played in challenging the penal system
d. Examine alternatives to incarceration
e. Introduce transformative justice models of justice

3. LGBTQ Communities and the Prison Industrial Complex
Goals of Workshop –
a. Understand the ways LGBTQ people are targets of policing and incarceration and the specific violence LGBTQ people face
b. Develop a historical analysis of the policing and incarceration of LGBTQ people
c. Examine the criminalization of LGBTQ life, specifically the lives of LGBTQ people of color, poor people, and homeless people
d. Reflect on mainstream LGBTQ participation in criminal justice work historically and in the present.
e. Introduce critique of Hate Crimes Legislation

4. Sexual Violence and the Prison Industrial Complex
Goals of Workshop –
a. Understand the ways sexual violence is used as a tool by police and prisons and the barriers survivors encounter when attempting to access resources
b. Deconstruct myths surrounding sexual violence in prison
c. Examine media depictions of sexual violence by police and in prison
d. Introduce the Prison Rape Elimination Act and its critiques
e. Create a space for survivor stories to be told and heard
